Senior living is an unknown quantity for concerned adult children who are moving their elderly parents into senior living communities for the first time and want them to be well-cared for. Here are some of the most common questions we receive about caring transitions, along with our answers:
Can We Afford It?
This is perhaps the most common question we hear. It’s important for children to take the time to research and compare costs and make sure that their loved one will be adequately funded. Insurance coverage varies, so it’s best to ask your insurance provider exactly what is covered. That said, don’t make your choices based on cost alone; your loved one’s care and comfort should always be the top priorities.
Will They Be Well Cared For?
A caring staff in a senior living community is essential. Be wary of red flags, such as the management neglecting to conduct background checks and drug tests as well as a high staff turnover. If the director doesn’t make time to speak to you or avoids answering your questions, cross this place off your list.
There should be adequate staff, with at least one on-site nurse and a physician who holds office hours in the community. If possible, drop by unannounced to see how the staff members care for the residents when they’re not expecting visitors. If they only allow “appointments-only” visits, reconsider the place. If you’re not sure of what to look for, we can give you advice, as well as provide reliable elderly moving services.
Will It Feel Like Home?
Privacy is one of the most basic needs for everyone, and seniors need to feel confident that they’ll have sufficient privacy in their new home. Confirm that the living quarters are private and inquire as to who has access to them. If possible, talk to residents and ask them what they think about the community.
How Do We Stay In Touch?
Transitions are difficult, and it’s important that you keep in touch with your loved one at every opportunity, especially during the first few months. Technology has made staying in touch easier than ever before, and it shouldn’t be hard to find a place that has an internet connection that lets you chat and do video calls. Likewise, you should get assurance from the facility that they will get in touch with you in case of emergency.
