Moving can be stressful, even if you’re excited about the chance and looking forward to living in your new home. The logistics of moving can drive anyone crazy, but if young children are involved, there’s an extra level of complexity and stress to consider. Don’t worry! The family and senior moving experts at Busy Buddies are here with tips to help make moving easier for children.
Get Them Ready
Don’t forget to talk to your children about the move well before it happens. Nobody likes surprises of such a magnitude as a move, after all, and children are no different. In the same vein, make sure you break the news calmly and slowly. For preschoolers and toddlers, you can do this about a month before you move–or sooner if you are selling your property and will have potential buyers visiting your home.
Give Them Time to Process the Change
Even if kids are excited about moving, they may still feel emotional about what they’re leaving behind. Children are very adaptable and will accept things eventually, but at their own pace. Expect it to take a minimum of six months before your child fully acclimates to their new life.
To make the transition as smooth as possible, make sure you have a clean slate. Literally. You can do this by taking advantage of decluttering assistance for families or downsizing help for seniors if you have older adults with you as well.
Stay Positive
Children will look to adults for cues on how to react to various things, including a move. So if you stay positive, they will see that everything will be just fine.
