Throw out any misconceptions you may have about senior moving and independent living in general. Here are six of the most common myths about it. Let’s set them straight.
Myth 1: It’s Going to Be Depressing
This is the number-one fear that many seniors have about independent or adult living. Some have bad memories of dark, disinfectant-smelling nursing homes. Others envision cramped quarters in overcrowded apartment towers. In truth, many senior communities today resemble a tightly-knit small town or a high-end spa resort. To see for yourself, visit the nearest independent living community. Spend an evening in a group activity, attend a lecture or concert or tour the facilities. An afternoon of tennis or one evening playing cards is about all it takes to put this myth to rest.
Myth 2: You Can’t Cook for Yourself
Some communities provide your own house, apartment or unit. Each has its own kitchen or kitchenette. Others have dining rooms or on-site cafes and restaurants, or both. Some communities serve regular meals in a communal dining room with the rent. In many, you can switch from cooking your own meals to a meal plan, and vice versa.
Myth 3: You Can’t Have a Pet
This is no longer true today. Cats are almost always allowed and dogs are usually permitted too, at least up to a certain size. Many communities have cats and dogs happy to make friends with anyone who offers a lap, a treat or a walk.
Myth 4: You’ll Lose Your Independence
In reality, independent living provides more independence. We usually witness this when we provide downsizing help for seniors. It frees people from the bulk of household chores and maintenance. Seniors spend more time at home on household chores than in socializing and sports. Independent living gives them more time to spend with friends or on hobbies. Enjoying life outside is not a problem, either. Coming and going is as easy as it is from your home. If one prefers not to drive, transportation is usually provided.
Myth 5: You Can’t Have Overnight Guests
Having family and friends around is important to seniors. There are independent living communities where that’s not only possible but also comfortable. It’s easier to have house guests in a detached unit or apartment than in a studio. If you cook for yourself or eat at on-site restaurants, hosting family for meals is easy. If you usually eat in community dining rooms, most offer a guest meal payment option.
