1. Sort Items by Category
Separating your belongings into different categories allows you to see duplicates so you can discard items you no longer need. It also makes packing and unpacking easier since you already have all items from a particular category in one place.
2. Decide What to Keep and What to Toss Out
This is where Marie Kondo’s life-changing method of decluttering comes in handy. Getting rid of stuff is a tedious procedure. But when it comes to moving, having fewer items to pack, transport, unload and organize should be your goal. If you want the packing process to go faster, make sure to declutter your home before putting things in boxes.
3. Sell, Donate and Recycle
Discarded items don’t necessarily have to end up in landfills. You can hold a garage sale or sell items online. This way, you can earn extra money to help with your move. If your move is drawing closer and you still have a bunch of unsold stuff, you can donate items to charity or recycling facilities.
4. Start Packing a Few Weeks Ahead
Do it little by little over a few weeks, so you won’t have to pack everything in one day. As a general rule, start with items you won’t be needing during the last few weeks in your old home. These may include off-season clothing, extra bed linens and pictures and keepsakes.
5. Label your moving boxes
Check the contents of the boxes and make sure they match the labels. Include descriptions or a list of the items in the box. You might want to write these on all sides of the boxes for easier identification. You can also create a number system where a number is assigned to a specific room, category or order. This will also make it easier to see if items went missing during transportation.
