If you’re experiencing empty nest syndrome, or if your home just seems too big, you should consider moving into a smaller home. The hardest part of the downsizing process is choosing which of your belongings you should take with you. As your trusted senior move managers, Busy Buddies offers some tips on how to downsize.
Assess the New Home
Obtain a copy of the blueprint, or at least an accurate layout of the new home. Then take the measurements of your furniture and check them against the layout. Be sure to factor in the size of the doorway, since the furniture will need to fit. Without a blueprint, you may have to visit the place to make measurements there.
Declutter Your Home
Declutter your home as early as possible. This allows you to focus on the items that matter and will also make packing easier. We understand that this process is not easy for many people, which is why Busy Buddies helps our clients declutter their home as part of our moving services. Decluttering is done at the pace our clients are comfortable with. At some point, some of these items will have to be moved, and we help with this, too, whether by giving them to family and friends, through estate sales or by donating them.
Make It an Opportunity to Upgrade
If the budget allows, consider the things in your home that need an upgrade. For example, do you really need to take that old oven or refrigerator with you, or would you rather buy new appliances that better fit your new space? Many new appliances are better at saving energy than their older counterparts anyway.
Make Moving Fun
Moving out of a home that you’ve lived in for a long time can be emotionally overwhelming. If possible, have your friends and family help you with moving out. It’s not just about getting a set of helping hands for the heavy lifting – that’s what we’re here for, after all – but also getting emotional support from your loved ones.
