One out of every four caregivers lives with an elderly loved one that they take care of. This arrangement can have many benefits including a better relationship between the family member and the senior. However, as one of the top senior move managers in our area, we recommend thinking carefully before making this decision.
Here are the things you need to consider before inviting your senior loved one to live with you:
Your Relationship
Take a careful look at how well you get along with the elderly member of the family that you plan to live with. It will be a real benefit if you two already enjoy each other’s company and if you know how to successfully resolve your differences. On the other hand, you shouldn’t expect a strained relationship to change overnight just because you’re now living together. Consider your existing relationship with them and how it will evolve once they live with you.
Special Care Requirements
Seniors often require special care. If your loved one has a chronic illness, remember that you will have to cope with this full-time once they live with you. Educate yourself about this illness if you want to provide the support that your loved one needs. As a senior moving expert, we recommend thinking about the care your loved one needs now and is likely to require in the future before proceeding with the move.
Senior-Friendliness of Your Home
Finally, before deciding to welcome your loved one into your home, determine whether your home is senior-friendly. Seniors have different safety and mobility requirements and your home has to accommodate these requirements. Things to consider include the size of your bathroom, the size of the doorways, existence of staircases and the number and location of the bedrooms in your home. Ask yourself if renovations will be required to make your home aging-in-place friendly.
